What Type Of Mountain Bike Do I Need?
I want to bike the Great Divide which is a mountain bike route that is about 2500 miles. I will probably do 45-50 miles per day, and I will be carrying all my own gear. The route will be very hard on the bike, so I would need something that would hold up good. Also, would a cyclocross bike be an option?

Specialized makes an Enduro. It is a top notch bike and will hold up perfectly for you. Have fun
Google Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail Blog and you will get some first hand reports and pictures. You can also contact these people and they can give you an opinion on bike choice. It looks like most choose a hard tail or rigid mountain bike. It looks like you understand the concept of reliable. I would go for mechanical disk brakes as they are very reliable and will wear and perform much better than rim brakes, especially in the wet. I have a cyclocross bike. About all it offers for trail riding over a road touring frame is a slightly higher bottom bracket. If you were buying a bike dedicated for this trip, and want a road type geometry, consider a durable touring frame such as the Surly Long Haul Trucker. It looks like most of the ride is on dirt/gravel roads. The LHT with the right tires would probably do as well as a loaded up rigid mountain frame and would be easier to get your gear all on. Below is a link to a blogger, who’s great divide ride I’ve read.
I’d go with a mountain bike with shocks. If you ride in dirt you don’t want a cyclocross bike.STAY AWAY from Walmart or any store like it. Go to your nearest bike shop and tell them what you intend to do.
My dream ride is shore to shore on a road bike..
The Titus RX-1 , Chumba EVO ( all available at Bobs-Bicycles.com in frames or full bike kit) will definitely make it a better ride.
Here is some good Information on that trail.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Divid…
