What Make A Good Mountain Bike Good? What Do I Need To Look For?

I have no idea know what to look for when choosing a good mountain bike. Im from Houston so no mountains :) , but have some decent trails. I know there are so many options now a days and have no idea where to start. To be honest im not sure if height matters but I am 5′9″. I plan to ride 2-3 times a week. Which name brands are good?

Thins that make up a good mountain bike:
    - light weight
    - double suspension
    - long suspension that won’t bottom out on a small bump
    - disc brakes
    - fat tires
Up here, Norco is a good brand.
Though a good bike from them costs a couple thousands.

it seems no one has answered this correctly.
size of suspension dosent count as you may want a good quality short travel bike.
or wieght might no matter you might want a heavier stonger bike.
the things to look out for are:
    suspension brands and models.
the gears and deraileur on the bike.
    the crank model and brand
a strong well reputation with the frame.
    good quality hubs.
    disc brakes.
alot of how good a bike is, is not what parts it has but the quality of those parts, look at the quality of the parts and see if they are worth it.
    to look out
    for bike brands look at:
    santa cruz
    specialized
    giant
    cannondale
    mongoose-for DH
    norco
    yeti
    for component brands look at:
    marzocchi-suspension
    fox-suspension
    sram-gears
    shimano-gears
    TruVativ-cranks
    funn-stems,handle bars, pedals
    crankbrothers-pedals
    ariel-hubs
    mavic-rims
best thing to do is get a list of all the part on the bike and look at the makers website and then compare to other parts,
also if you get a list of the parts on yahoo mabey we can help more directly.
    cheers hope this helps=]

If you like to ride trails you really don’t need a mountain bike. Look at a hybrid mountain bike or a comfort path bike. They are liter then the normal mountain bike and have a more up right riding position. For you height you want a 18-19 inch frame. Check out the local bike shops, don’t buy a bike from Walmart or any of the big box stores.
You want to look at Trek, Specialized, Giant, Raleigh, Fuji, and a few other brands.
You do not want a dual suspension bike they eat up too much energy and disk drakes are a waste of money for the riding you want to do.

    specialize
    haro
diamond back makes a good one

  5. get a diamondback.
