The Giant XTC 2 is actually pretty nice... and the 2008 paint job is pretty nice too. The components are pretty well rounded for a $600 bike. The geometry is also a little more upright which some people find more comfortable. Trek also has the 6000 and 6500. Not too bad overall but a little more stretched out than the Giant bikes and Specialized bikes. Specialized also has the hardtail version of the stumpjumper and the Rockhopper. These are pretty good too but i'm not sure if they are in you limit. See if they have any of those. For the $600 limit, those are the only companies I would recommend. Other companies are good but put more "thought" into their more expensive models. Don't get me wrong... $600 gets you a nice bike. Also, look for bikes they might have on sale. Always get the right size bike for you though... don't go too big or too small. If you do trail riding,.. it will hurt you if you are too big or too small.

May also want to check out GIANT:
Yukon: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike…
and
XTC 2:http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike…
The XTC 2 is a really nice bike. But all the ones I listed and your Specialized are fairly entry level. They are all pretty similar. Little differences in quality of parts.

Novara is really well built and has better parts than you'd find on anything else in the same price range.
