Anything less then a road bike is a waste of time. A road bike with aero bars will work fine for the race and will be good for training.

To make it worth your money, buy a decent road bike, not a cheap, heavy one. Get them from a bike shop, as the best thing is to get sized & test some out. You don’t need a top-end race bike, start at lower-end models. To make it a good investment, you’ll spend about $800 each from what I’ve seen (I live in New England). You could add clip-on aero bars, but to get the best use from them aerodynamically, you’d want to get a bike fit too (which is pricey).
That being said, 2 of my friends did their first triathlon with their mountain bikes. It was a slower ride, but they finished & loved it. One of them immediately went out & bought a road bike after, because she caught the bug! Point being, don’t refrain from a race because you haven’t bought a road bike yet. Good luck with the shopping! And congrats on starting triathlon!

Jamis has a decent bike for about $550.00.
ProCyclery in Las Vegas sells Jamis and is a great store with a ton of knowledge.
I’m not too sure where you’re located, but you can contact Rich, Deb or Rodney and tell them Coach Nic of Nix Tri Planet told you about them. Their number is 702 228 9460.

at a minimum you should use a road bike. once you get more serious with your triathlon training you could think about buying a triathlon bike
