I am 6′1 and am looking to buy a mountain bike. Should I be looking for a medium or large bike and what size does each actually represent, any help would be appreciated

You”ll want a large. Medium is about an 18in seat tube while large is typically 19.5-21 in

The best way to tell is to go to a store and get fitted. All bikes are shaped differently, so you cannot always tell just from medium or large. Most likely you will be a large, but if, for example, you had short legs or arms a medium could be more comfortable.
Simply put, medium and large are just how tall the bike is, which affects how much room you have when you stand over it, and how far your feet go to reach the peddles.

You would be looking at a large. Frames are measured from the center of the crank to the top of the seat tube where the seat clamp is located. You go by inseam measurement more the height. If the manufacturer has the geometry measurements of the frame you can see what the seat tube length is. Bike frames are usually measured in inches or cm and not s,m,l.http://www.coloradocyclist.com/bikefit
