What Is A Good Starter Mountain Bike?

Ok, so I’m looking to get a mountain bike. Mostly gonna be for trails or off roading. Not looking to spend a whole lot of money here, maybe 400-500 bucks i guess, but just wondering what is a decent bike for someone beginning?

  1. Shawn, your budget is wonderful—you can easily find a good hardtail at Cambria Bikes (www.cambriabike.com), Wheel World (www.wheelworld.com), EBAY ( http://www.ebay.com—click Sporting Goods in the categories section—you’ll see CYCLING ). There are a lot to choose from so take your time and be sure it has good components and a tough drivetrain. Have fun and RIDE!

    + 1 what Jay L says.
Two words should never be used in the same sentence. “Cheap” and “suspension”. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but full suspension, that is SAFE and QUALITY stuff costs money. Low 4 figures at minimum.
And cheap suspension bikes have low quality components, cheap frames to achieve the goal of looking like FS.
The good news is you can get a nice quality hardtail with a great upgrade-worthy frame for that price that will be fine for most but the most extreme off roading.
Look at Kona bikes. Great bang for the buck. Try lots of bikes and support your local bike shop.

KHS, Specialized, and Trek all make good entry level mtb in your price range
go to your local bike shop and look around (stay away from the department or sporting goods stores)

oh man, for $400-$500, you’ve passed the starter bike range. People above me are offering very good specific suggestions.
I would take that $400 and go to a bike store and tell them you have $400, what’s the best mountain bike. They’ll show you things that are $450 and $475, and that’s what you get.
    Lighter the better!
