Is It Wierd To Ride A Mountain Bike On The Streets?

Some people online say that mountain can only be ridden offroad. But I disagree, wouldn’t it be like driving a knobby tired Jeep or Hummer on road? But on a bike? Opinions? Thanks.

    “Some people online say….”
Don’t believe everything you read online. There’s no minimum knowledge requirement to post an opinion online. Anyone that says a mountain bike can only be ridden off pavement is a fool. I see mountain bikes ridden on the road (even the sidewalk — gasp!) every day. So, clearly, it’s possible.
Is it different than riding a road bike on the pavement? Sure, but different isn’t weird…or impossible for that matter. You can find an appropriate tire for just about any surface to mount on a mountain bike.

Knobbly tyres are wasted on the road – they require more energy from you to keep moving. And if you’re going to ride in the wet then the absence of mudguards will really show-up.
There are people who can’t afford two whole bikes (or don’t have the storage space) so they have a mountain bike with two sets of tyres (or wheels) and removable mudguards.
It’s all about what works for each individual, unless they are ignorant or have been mis-sold.

It is fine to ride a mountain bike on the road, but if you only ride on the road, a mountain bike is not the best choice, it is designed for off road riding, and if you don’t need that capability, it’s silly to use one that way when you could be riding a bike designed for what you are doing.

Well, if you’re riding a massive full suspension downhill mountain bike with a full face helmet on and wearing body armour, then it would be kinda weird, but most of the time it looks fine. Riding a mountain bike on the road is probably overkill, but it wouldn’t look weird.

A bike is a bike. the only difference just like with cars, the regular road bikes can only be on a road, where as a mtn bike or offroad truck can do both. Have fun riding a mtn bike on the road, I do. I put an all terrain tire on my mtn bike so I can do lite dirt trails with it as well.

  6. No, it’s not weird. It’s not as optimal as a road bike, but very doable.
If you ride a lot on the streets, you could consider changing the tires from knobbies to slicks or semislicks.
